This morning I was driving to an appointment when a large bird soared into view. I didn’t pay much attention, because I see a lot of hawks and buzzards in the sky.
Then I noticed a flash of white and looked over to see a handsome bald eagle settle onto a tree branch next to the road.
The sight took my breath away and I wish I had been on an empty back road so I could have pulled over and admired him some more.
Although we by no means live in the country, there is enough open space around us so we see a variety of wildlife. The other evening we came home to find a deer in our front yard. And several times I’ve seen beautiful red foxes trotting along our lane or through the ravine in back of our house.
Every time I see a wild animal like that, I’m filled with a sense of excitement. Even the bunnies in the yard at dusk make me stop in wonder.
But to see a bald eagle—well, that is something very rare and special.
As I drove on, that silly old quote popped into my head. “It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you work with turkeys.”
Which made me think.
If I surround myself with toxic people, or people who don’t make me feel good, I’ll be dragged down by their bad energy.
If my living and work spaces are cluttered and not full of beautiful things, my thoughts and feeling will also be cluttered and ugly.
If I let negative thoughts, feelings and experiences take control of my life, I’ll never be able to soar.
The fact is, any turkeys in my life are there because I allow them to be. Turkeys don’t hang out with eagles (except, maybe, as lunch) and if I want to live a happy, joyful, free life I need to get out of the underbrush and take to the skies.
Are you letting turkeys into your life? What changes can you make right now to get rid of some of them?
